Reasons to Use Wood when you have LEGO desk

I am still using my table for my computer work and I think that officially make my table a desk. It is a cool, gray laminate table of 1950s with curved sides. There are many people who have modern tables made up of particle or pressed board. Some of these desks are made from glass top or metal and solid wood. It means that you can have lots of variety of these desks when you are looking for perfect desk. There is LEGO desk which is the most unusual desk I have seen.

A gentleman who was hired by an eCommerce company wanted a LEGO desk about 10 years ago. His wish was fulfilled as company needed his services badly. It was important to know why he wanted to have LEGO desk. I came to know that he was given bad times by his fellow employees at his previous job about his inbox which remained full al the time. He told them that he can build bigger inbox if he could have a LEGO desk. It seemed that he was LEGO lover in his childhood or he might be making a joke. There were some people who took the old adage that do something you like seriously. Seven months were taken by the company to find him. They finally found Eric Harshbarger who could build LEGO projects on commission and it was his part time job. He was agreed to take on project when he was contacted.

We don’t know how much did he get from this project and it was none of our business as well. It was known that he was paid $2000 for LEGO pieces. Nobody will be surprised by this price if he has children who like LEGOs. The little building pieces of LEGO are not cheap but good thing about it is that it can last forever. You might know that basic LEGO comes in tubs if you have bought LEGO before. All pieces were used by Eric from 300 small base plates, 32 Blue tubs, and 63 blue plate packs. Some special pieces were also purchased from private collectors in order to make drawer slides.

It can take only few weeks to build on the desk once the basic design is completed. Eric had to glue all the pieces together after the approval of company about the desk. It includes flipping of desk upside down, disassembling the desk pieces one by during the gluing process together and then reassembling all these pieces. The desk was shipped to Seattle on its completion which cost about $800.

  • Some facts about LEGO desk
  • There were about 35000 LEGO bricks used.
  • The weight of desk was 125 pounds
  • The use of glue was about 7 pounds
  • The width of desk is 60”, height is 29.5” and depth is 30”.
  • There are six small and one large working drawer in this desk
  • There is folding lid on the top with hole to drop computer cables.
  • These desks are available in blue, red, green, yellow, white and black colors which are assembled in nice patterns.

I still want to know whether its top is smooth or bumpy.
