Early desks, slant desks, Wooton desks, Trestle desk, Bureau a gradin, Armoire, Student desk, Corner desks, secretary, fall front desk, Bargueno desk, Roll top desks, Pedestal desks, steel desks and computer desks are some common styles of desks in the market.
Pedestal Desks
These desks are being used for last few hundred years and this style is still preserves. The flat basic surface is set on two pedestals or set of drawers and there is one central drawer in between the two sets above the legs of users. These are very large desks. The top was inlaid with large panel of leather in mid 18th century which provided more comfortable writing surface. The modesty panel was added in these desks in 19th century in order to hide the legs of the users. These larger and fancier desks are available today in the form of executive desks.
Student Desks
Any desk which is used by the students is defined as student desk but actually this desk is quite similar to the writing desk or small pedestal which was used by the teenagers in their room before the advent of computers. The size of these desks is smaller as compared to traditional pedestal desks. There is only one pedestal drawer in these desks on one side and legs on the other side. There are left pedestal or right pedestal student desks.
There are single seated desks styles available as well in which chairs are attached and found in the classrooms. There is variation is styles from small pedestal desks and lift desk tops to simple writing desks with different sizes.
Steel desks
These desks are made with steel and it think that these desks are used by big heavy bad boys in the government offices. These desks were came our used furniture store later and I did not like it. These desks were large, heavy and it was difficult to move. These were actually large pedestal desks which were made of steel so that they last forever.
Corner desks
These desks are being used by the people since 20th century and these desks can be fitted easily in the corner. There are some basic corner desks while others have corner hutches on the top. There are side extensions in some of these desks which can provide larger work surface. Mostly these styles are used for computers. Some of these desks are evolved in cubicle desks as well which provide large work area for lots of people.
Computer desks
These desks have been around for only couple of decades. These desks are available in different styles and varieties with hutches, drawers and shelves etc. This style is for computer use. The keyboard and mouse can be kept in lower drawers and there is small shelf on the top for monitor and lower shelf for CPU. These desks are made with metal, wood, press boards and combination of different materials. These desks are more convenient with small adjustments as compared to older styles desks.
This is the end of my look on different styles of desk but I have discovered that there are lots of styles of desks apart from above mentioned names. The important thing is that everyone needs a desk and one must choose the desk which is suitable to his personality and needs. |
